What are Sprouts?

Sprouts are seeds that have been germinated. You harvest and eat the baby plants once they are several days old. They can be put on salads, sandwiches, or eaten on their own. The texture is like salad but with a crunch. I absolutely love the hint of spiciness from the radish!

How To Grow Sprouts

First, place two tablespoons of seeds in a mason jar, cover them with 1 cup of water. Add 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar and allow to the seeds to soak for fifteen minutes.

Soaking the seeds does two things: 1. It kills any bacteria that may be hanging around on your seeds, 2. it breaks down the seed coat which allows for a better germination rate.

Next, rinse the seeds with water until all of the vinegar smell is eliminated.

Cover the seeds with water again and allow to them to soak for 4 hours.

Finally, rinse the seeds again this time draining all of the water out of the jar.

Soaking Sprouts

Rinse the seeds three times a day for the next five days. I rinse my seeds at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This helps me to remember since I am in the kitchen anyways. Once the plants have emerged and they have small green leaves you are ready to harvest.

Place the sprouts in a bowl and cover with water. Most of the empty seed coats will float to the top. Next, skim them off with a spoon. The seed coats have a tendency to rot so you don’t want them in your sprouts. Place the sprouts in a covered container and place them in the refrigerator.

Eat the sprouts within 2-3 days.
