Nothing beats a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up from the inside out. It is a delicious, sweet treat that you can quickly make at home. My version is naturally sweetened with honey, and we use carob powder as a substitute for the cocoa powder, but you can use either carob or cocoa. Come into my kitchen with me and let’s learn how to make hot chocolate.
What You Need:
Milk: Any milk that your family enjoys will do, but of course I am a huge advocate of raw milk. No milk cow? read my post about where to find local food to find a farmer that provides healthy raw milk!
Carob Powder: If you have never heard of carob read my post on What is carob and how do you use it. I buy carob powder in bulk from Azure Standard. It is mild in flavor and is our family’s favorite. As I stated above you can always use cocoa powder.
Honey: My favorite honey is Raw, Clover Honey. I buy it in 12 pound jars. The flavor is excellent and a really good price.
Marshmallows: Read my post on How to make marshmallows using honey. I also show you how to cut them into mini marshmallows to use in the hot chocolate. You can freeze them too so that you have marshmallows at the ready.
How to Make Hot Chocolate
First, pour six cups of milk into a small saucepan on medium low heat. Add 1/2 cup of honey, pinch of sea salt, and 1 tsp of vanilla (optional).
Warm the milk and honey mixture until it reaches around 90 degrees, or it is warm to the touch. The milk needs to be warm for the carob powder to dissolve. Cold milk makes carob powder clump which does not make a good hot chocolate.
After the milk is warmed add the 5 tbsp. of carob powder and whisk it into the milk.
Now that everything is combined, heat the hot chocolate until it is to your liking.
Last but not least, add mini marshmallows on top and enjoy!
A few tips:
Do not leave the milk mixture on the heat and walk away. Stir occasionally to make sure it does not scorch on the bottom.
Keep the hot chocolate on medium low heat to also prevent scorching. If you do turn up the heat stir constantly.
The carob powder does dissolve well, but it also helps to stir the hot chocolate before drinking because the carob falls to the bottom of the cup.
